Bill Long of Joplin, Mo., brought home the best of show prize at the AMP hot rod contest with his modified hot tamale red 1956 Chevy Bel Air two-door hardtop he calls “LegendAir.” He took the decal from a Legend bass boat and removed the “Bel” part of the name to combine it on the car.
Long completely rebuilt the car from special parts provided by J&L Classics in West Fork. It features an Art Morrison GT-Sport TRI-5 chassis, a Tremec T56 six-speed transmission capable of 520 Horsepower, one-of-a-kind Boyd Coddington wheels and all handmade interior.
A retired engineer who made his first trip to the rally, Long rebuilds cars as a hobby and got a kick out of beating a few professional restorers at the show.
“I hunt, fish and play with cars. It doesn’t get any better than that,” Long said after winning the award and $500 prize.
