Sun Down, Crowd Up

Posted on 26 September 2009

The only real estate in Fayetteville more congested than the pavement of Dickson Street is the sidewalks on either side.

Crowds are swelling as Bikes, Blues & BBQ enters its final evening. The rumble of motorcycle exhausts is punctuated by the booming revs as bikers gun their engines. Official rally shutdown is at 2 a.m.

And The Winner Is…

Posted on 26 September 2009

Bill Long of Joplin, Mo., brought home the best of show prize at the AMP hot rod contest with his modified hot tamale red 1956 Chevy Bel Air two-door hardtop he calls “LegendAir.” He took the decal from a Legend bass boat and removed the “Bel” part of the name to combine it on the [...]

Flying the Flag

Posted on 26 September 2009

For this guy’s sake, I hope he didn’t have a radio on his bike.

As he rolled down College Avenue about 4:30 Saturday afternoon, Alabama was opening up a big lead over the Razorbacks in Tuscaloosa.
The Crimson Tide crushed the Hogs, 35-7.
And, kudos to the boss, Donna Lonchar, for snapping this pic. Who says editors aren’t [...]

Parade Time

Posted on 26 September 2009

It’s parade time through downtown Fayetteville.
The annual Parade of Power is underway, with a steady stream of bikes making the circle from Baum Stadium through the University of Arkansas campus, down Dickson and back to the track. From Fayetteville police Cpl. Jason Alvarado in front to the last trailing bike, the parade stretched two and [...]

For Better or Worse

Posted on 26 September 2009

It’s a prefect day for an outdoor wedding, if not in a traditional church setting.
These two bikers tied the knot Saturday afternoon on the main stage in front of hundreds of rallygoers at the 10th annual Bikes, Blues & BBQ rally. That really is a bridal veil on the head of the new Mrs. David [...]

Wheel to Wheel

Posted on 26 September 2009

The traffic jam has outgrown Dickson Street.
Whether on foot or atop a bike, it’s slow going everywhere around downtown. That’s especially true at intersections, where the crosswalk signs are little more than a suggestion to pedestrian crowds.

Parked bikes jam the side streets, and the backup on College Avenue stretches for several blocks, mostly bikes waiting [...]

Blues in a Minor Chord

Posted on 26 September 2009

Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” might not qualify as true blues music, but that didn’t bother one tiny dancer.
While everyone else Friday afternoon in the beer garden outside Baum Stadium just sat in chairs nodding along with the song, this toddler was grooving and getting down.
The music is blaring and continues all day on three stages.

Wicked Wheelies

Posted on 26 September 2009

These guys do things most bikers wouldn’t even consider trying.

Wheelies, stoppies, sidesaddle riding, burnouts and sliding skids are just a few tricks two stunt-riding teams showed off Friday.
Missed it? No worries. These daredevils will go at it again today just outside Baum Stadium.

Morning Edition

Posted on 26 September 2009

Police arrested 23 people Friday during the Bikes, Blues & BBQ, almost half of them for public intoxication, according to a police press release.
All the arrests were misdemeanors, and no motorcycle accidents reported Friday.

Friday Night’s All Right

Posted on 26 September 2009

Just when it looked like this year’s BBB would draw less of a crowd than in recent years, along came Friday.
A crowd numbering in the thousands earlier in the week quickly multiplied into the hundreds of thousands for the start of the weekend. Perfect weather during the daytime turned into a cool, pristine night that [...]

Full Gardens

Posted on 26 September 2009

Full House electrified the Main Stage to a near-capacity crowd at the Beer Gardens. Isn’t it ironic?
Featuring a four-piece horn section that blistered through good-time songs, Full House showed its moxy on covers of groovy dance classics like “Knock on Wood” and “Higher and Higher.” And it worked. The booty-shaking-ometer went off the charts at [...]

Big Blues

Posted on 25 September 2009

There’s nothing small about Big Uns. Big grooves and big licks drove it home for the folks Friday night at the Main Stage.
Their secret? Play songs people know. The band started strong with a soulful rendition of The Allman Brothers’ “Whipping Post,” leaving lead singer Darren Ray crooning in the moonlight. The band ran through [...]

Get ‘Em

Posted on 25 September 2009

With the sun setting on Dickson Street, Earl and ‘Em took to the stage and offered up a heaping plate of blues. For those who will miss The Cate Brothers at this year’s rally, they had to settle for just one brother.
Earl Cate let his guitar do the talking on Johnny Lee Hooker and John [...]

Beer Here

Posted on 25 September 2009

The Baum Stadium barbecue cooking area’s bar, in the parking lot across from Baum Stadium, is open for business as part of Bikes, Blues & BBQ. Bring your thirst and a thick wallet. Beers are $5 each with mixed drinks higher. You can also cool off with a cold one at the stage area in [...]

Aces High

Posted on 25 September 2009

Think you can beat four queens and a nine kicker?
That was the high hand with just minutes to go in Friday’s poker run. This guy’s two of diamonds didn’t even bring him close to a decent hand, but he and other riders can try again beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday.
First bike leaves at 8, last [...]

Leave Those Dogs At Home

Posted on 25 September 2009

Even though dogs aren’t allowed on Dickson Street during the rally, this guy got away with it. Must have been the sunglasses. Police are issuing verbal warnings to those with four-legged friends.

Rollin’ on Four

Posted on 25 September 2009

As if there wasn’t enough shiny chrome and tricked-out paint on the motorcycles, a dedicated few showed off their four-wheeled custom creations at the Arkansas Music Pavilion.
From show winners to rat rods, bone stock to wild custom, about 25 classic car owners showed off their rides.
The venerable ‘55-’57 Chevrolet BelAir was well represented, as were [...]

Grills Gone Wild

The vehicles, a Chevrolet Avalanche [...]

Scooter Brigade

Posted on 25 September 2009

They’re small, but they’re scrappy. Come 9 a.m. Saturday, they can be sleuths as well.
Whether rolling down the road or parked among their bigger brethren, scooters are out in force for the rally. Saturday, they’ve got a mission, should they choose to accept it.
The first annual Scooter Scramble scavenger hunt begins at 9 a.m. in [...]

Biking Viking

Posted on 25 September 2009

Surely, there are deer in the woods of Northwest Arkansas shaking their heads, wondering how a brethren learned how to ride a motorcycle. Landus Dutton of Harrison shows his unique headgear during the Bikes, Blues & BBQ. “I’d seen it a couple of times and thought I had to get me some of those,” Dutton [...]

Back To Basics

Posted on 24 September 2009

Finally…some booty shakin’.
The FOS Project brought the blues back to the basics with a little bit of funk and soul thrown in for good measure. And for the first time since music began at the Main Stage, a serious attempt at dancing with the masses occurred at the front of the stage. Maybe it was [...]

These Ribs Are Under Arrest

Posted on 24 September 2009

Security’s going smooth at the southern venue, but that doesn’t entitle Lt. Gary Crain to much of a lunch break.
The University of Arkansas officer got a few minutes to run over and grab a plateful of ribs, but a leisurely lunch was out of the question.
“I’ve got to eat standing up, so it’s not much [...]
